Double Boiled Papaya in Milk 木瓜炖鲜奶 - Confinement Month #2


Confinement should be an enjoyable time.
Bonding with a new baby, and getting pampered by the people around you after delivery.
Gastronomically and emotionally. So why not have some dessert!!

My friend, Wai Wai came to visit me on June 4th and told me about this dessert that she encountered during her stay at a confinement house. The cook prepared this dessert to aid her lactation. And coincidently, I encountered this recipe while surfing that night itself. It was perfect since I had 2 slices of papaya in the fridge, leftover from my self labour induction. I wouldn't want to eat them raw since they were almost 6 days old in the fridge, so I made this delicious dessert with it.


This dessert is believed to help with lactating. But haha, I'm not really sure about its effects as papaya has not much effect on me during Lydia's time. My confinement lady cooked ripe papaya soup, green papaya soup , and no matter what state the papaya is in, my milk supply remain unchanged.... LOW. But I've heard many tell of its wonders in helping to increase milk.

At first, I was feeling a bit weird preparing this. Cooked papaya? In Milk? With sugar? Gosh, how will this taste like?
When I took one spoonful of it, my eyes totally lit up! It was totally delightful. It feels like eating sweet potato dessert with coconut milk, only better!! Mouthfeel and fragrance is a new experience to me. A good one. My MIL quickly bookmarked this to prepare for my SIL's upcoming confinement in August.

This dessert can be served to anyone, not only post partum ladies. Just that, it helps with lactating. But really, anyone can take this.


Double Boiled Papaya in Milk
Recipe source: MiXueEr via MeishiChina

1/2 cup papaya cube/balls
1/2 cup fresh milk
Little bits of rock sugar

1. Prepare a pot. Put in an elevated steaming rack, and put water 1-2cm higher than the rack. Bring to a boil
2. Put papaya into heatproof bowl.
3. Put rock sugar over papaya.
4. Put papaya into the pot onto the rack and double boil on high heat for 15 minutes. Remember to put the lid on and the water should not come up higher than half the height of the bowl.
5. Turn off the heat. Pour fresh milk over the papaya. Put the lid back on and turn heat to high and double boil for another 10 minutes.
6. Serve warm.

  1. Look good !really can get more milk?when I born Yi hang the confinement lady also give me drink green papaya soup and black bean soup.I like to drink,but don't see the effect.my friend said let the baby suck your nipple every day the milk will come out automatic .

    My cousin's wife's baby never suck at all. She can get 2 large Avent bottles each pumping session. It didn't work too well for me too, but I guess it depends on individuals

    Actually the recipes featured in my confinement month are rather neutral. It can be consumed by anyone. I'm feeding my family with most of my dishes.

  4. To induce more milk, would encourage to drink more fishy soup eg. ikan bilis soup, old timer used to do so. I hv tried b4.

  9. Congrats! I drank lots of soya milk and ate lots of fish to boost supply. Also it is important to feed v often. Esp the night feeds. I actually set the alarm so that I woke up every two hrs to feed. All the best to your bfdg journey !

    Thanks for the suggestion. I can never drink more than 1 glass of soy milk per day, if not my gout will be back on my knee. I do not breastfeed past midnight and I do not breastfeed exclusively. I have reasons for that.

  17. Today is 24th day im in "Pantang". I drink double boiled papaya in milk yesterday around 4.30pm, but without rock sugar, believe it or not when i wake up to feed my baby early morning today i can feel the difference of my breast. Its full of milk :-) ... Tq so much for the recipe...
